Dr. S. Kendall Smith, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, specializing in general anesthesiology and critical care medicine. Her clinical expertise is complemented by a robust research program that focuses on the impact of circadian health on clinical outcomes of hospitalized and critically ill older adults. Dr. Smith’s research probes the mechanistic interplay between aging, the circadian clock, and perioperative neurocognitive disorders, with an emphasis on postoperative delirium.
Dr. Smith’s research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) GEMSSTAR R03 Award and Washington University School of Medicine KL2 Career Development Award. In addition to her research, Dr. Smith plays is the Associate Program Director of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program and an Assistant Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Washington University Department of Anesthesiology.
A proud alumna of the 2021 NIDUS Bootcamp, Dr. Smith also actively engages in professional service. She serves as the Co-Chair of the American Delirium Society (ADS) Research Committee and working group leader for the Washington University Center on Biological Rhythms and Sleep (COBRAS), where advances the understanding of circadian biology in clinical settings.
