October 2025 Mentoring Session
Brain resilience and its measurement during the perioperative period
Brain resilience refers to the brain's capacity to resist, overcome, or thrive in the face of adversity, such as the physiological stress of surgery. Miles Berger, MD, (Stanford University) and Ben Palanca, MD, PHD, MSCI, (Washington University in St. Louis), are developing assessments to help understand how the aging brain copes with surgical insult and to identify biologic signals that may predict resilience or vulnerability to postoperative neurocognitive disorders.
