Dr. Sikandar Khan

Dr. Sikandar Khan, DO, MS, is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician, Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, and Scientist at the Indiana University Center for Aging Research. His research is focused on the nexus of acute respiratory failure, delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU), and cognitive and physical function outcomes in critically ill older adults.

Dr. Khan is funded by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) Paul Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award to study the role of oxidative stress post-ICU aging. His research activities to date include measurement of delirium severity, identification of delirium risk factors, exploring delirium’s association with dementia through blood-based biomarkers and testing novel non-pharmacological interventions to mitigate ICU delirium.

Dr. Khan also serves as Director of the Indiana University Health ICU Survivor Center which is focused on maximizing the cognitive, physical, mental health and quality of life recovery for ICU survivors. In addition to being a 2017 NIDUS Bootcamp Alum, Dr. Khan received the American Society for Clinical Investigation’s 2023 Young Physician Scientist Award, serves on the American Delirium Society’s (ADS) Board of Directors, and in the ADS Office of Innovation and Implementation.
